What is a percentage calculator?
A percentage calculator is a free online tool that answers the three questions people ask about percentages: what is X% of Y, what percent X is of Y, and the percent change between two numbers. Discounts, tips, grades and growth rates all become one-line calculations.
The three modes explained
- X% of Y — discounts and tips. Example: 20% of $80 = $16 off.
- X is what % of Y — grades and shares. Example: 45 out of 60 = 75%.
- % change — growth or decline. Example: from 200 to 250 visitors = +25%.

- X% of Y = (X ÷ 100) × Y
- X as % of Y = (X ÷ Y) × 100
- % change = ((new − old) ÷ |old|) × 100
