Free SHA-256 / SHA-512 Hash Generator

Type text, get its SHA-256 and SHA-512 fingerprints instantly. Computed with your browser's built-in crypto engine.

Uses the Web Crypto API (SubtleCrypto). 100% free · No signup · Your text never leaves your browser.

What is a hash generator?

A hash generator computes a fixed-length fingerprint (like SHA-256) of any text. Even one changed character produces a completely different hash. Developers use hashes to verify file integrity, store passwords safely and create checksums.

How to use it

  • Step 1: Type or paste text.
  • Step 2: Read the SHA-256 and SHA-512 hashes — they appear automatically.
  • Step 3: Copy either hash with one click.

SHA-256 vs SHA-512

Both are secure hash functions from the SHA-2 family. SHA-256 produces a 64-character hash and is the standard for most uses (Bitcoin, TLS certificates, password storage with proper salting). SHA-512 produces a 128-character hash with a larger security margin. For everyday checksums and comparisons, SHA-256 is the usual choice.

Private by design

Hashing uses your browser's Web Crypto API (SubtleCrypto) — the same engine behind HTTPS. Your text is never uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Is this hash generator free?

Yes — free forever, no signup.

Can a hash be reversed to get my text back?

No. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are one-way functions — that's the entire point. You can verify text against a hash, but you can't recover text from one.

Why do small text changes create totally different hashes?

That's the avalanche effect, a designed property: it guarantees even tiny tampering is detectable.

Is it safe to hash passwords here?

For quick checks yes, but production password storage needs a slow password-hashing function (bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2) with unique salts — plain SHA-256 is too fast for that job.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the page has loaded — the crypto engine is built into your browser.

What is a checksum used for?

Comparing a downloaded file's published hash with one you compute locally proves the file arrived intact and unmodified.

Short answer: A hash generator computes a fixed-length fingerprint (like SHA-256) of any text. Even one changed character produces a completely different hash. Developers use hashes to verify file integrity, store passwords safely and create checksums.
